Schwinn BIke - Great!, January 30, 2010
By Mary D. Stabler

described and arrived as expected... it is a little taller than most 24" Bikes... the seat does not receed into the post as far as other 24" bikes we have. This is an issue when moving kids up to the next size bike. However, we swapped posted seat with outgrown schwinn bike.. reduced it by one inch.

Nice Bike for Girls, February 3, 2010
By D. Fuentecilla "lunataina" (Miami, Florida, USA)

This is a very pretty and sturdy bike for girls. My daughter is 9 and loves it. We only had one problem with it when it arrived with a broken reflector but that was easily remedied. It was simple to put together, although my husband does have some experience with bikes. For the price it is a great purchase.

Seems Like a Decent Bike but Some Qualilty Control Issues, December 28, 2009
By Erik Zenhausern (New York, NY)

A few weeks before Christmas I ordered this bike for my 7 year old daughter. I wanted to get her something that was of decent quality she could use for the next few years. I didn't want to spend too much because if she really gets into cycling she will want to upgrade to a more sophisticated bike, but if not this bike will allow her to pedal around the neighborhood for some time to come.

Unfortunatley, there were problems with the bike from the start. I ordered it a couple of weeks before Christmas but didn't get to open the package until last Tuesday. I discovered that the bike was damaged and needed to be replaced. Amazon was great and did their best to send a replacement overnight in time for Christmas. Tracking the package online it looked like there was some kind of hold up at the Memphis facility and it did not leave there until 1 PM on Christmas Eve. Unfortunately, the bike did not arrive in time, or so I thought. On Christmas morning, after all the gifts had been opened, I went outside and was shocked and pleasantly surprised to see the bike on the front doorstep. Wow! UPS delivered it on Christmas morning. There must be a Santa Claus.

Too bad there was still a problem with the bike, though. When I opened the box everything seemed to be in order but I could not get the front wheel to fit on the fork. I am not the world's most mechanically inclined but I have worked on my own bikes since I was 12 years old. No matter what I did I could not get the front wheel on. When I called Schwinn (actually Pacific Cycle)it seems like there is something wrong with the front fork and they will need to send a replacement.

IF I can get the bike together I'm sure it's going to be fine and worth the money I spent, but the packaging was not great, which is why the first shipment was damaged. It also seems there is little quality control with products shipped out. Sliding the front wheel on the fork should be a very simple procedure.

Many thanks to Amazon and UPS for doing a great job, but if I had to do this over again I would have spent the extra money and gone to a bike shop.

Great product! Daughter had tears of joy!!, March 11, 2009
By Ed A. Collado "rocket929" (Fort Lauderdale, FL)

First of all, I would NEVER take the time to build a bike for $100.00! The right price AND it saved me time from getting into my car and driving to the store. Delivered to my home, no shipping charge. The bike was 90% put together. Final assembly was VERY easy! Great BRIGHT colors! Dad did GOOD! How do I know? The tears of joy that poured from my daughters eyes when she layed her eyes on it! How does it ride? Sorry, can't help you there. A bit small for me! :) But my 8 year old gives it a thumbs up!

Good commute bike, October 15, 2009
By Carlos J. Rendon

I don't know very much about bikes. This one seems to be a good fit for me (the causal bike commuter) and it seems to be a good price compared to what I saw in bike stores. I really like that it comes with a chain guard, shocks, splash guards and the storage rack. I've been using it to commute to work 1-2 miles for the past month or so.

Very Nice Bike for the Money, July 6, 2009
By Gary D. Fitzgerald (Greensboro, GA)

My wife and I decided to purchase bikes to expand our exercise options. Neither of us had ridden in decades, but our son is an avid cyclist and he suggested we look at Hybrids. After looking at several options, we decided to purchase both a Men's and Women's version of this bike and we couldn't be happier. They're relatively lightweight and the components all appear to be of fairly high quality for a bike priced in this range.

The limited assembly was easy, although I must say the 1st one took me longer than the 15 minutes referenced by the original reviewer. Almost everything is adjustable for comfort, and like the original reviewer, we too took off the fenders and like the result. It would have been nice if Schwinn had included a couple of allen wrenches, and maybe a pouch to carry them in, since that is the tool most often needed for assembly and adjustments.

We have been riding for a couple of weeks now and really like the way the bikes handle. I'm a big guy, well over 200lbs, yet the ride is smooth and comfortable. We are amazed at how those gears smooth out the hills. Most of our riding is on pavement, but we have ridden on some gravel/dirt roads, and the "Hybrid" tires performed well.

My wife and I agree that this is definitely a great bike for the price.

Nice surprise for less than Bike shop prices, June 3, 2009
By L. Laregina (Montclair, NJ)

I purchased this Schwinn partly because they seem to have maintained a long-standing reputation for quality and also because I loved mine when I was younger. I primarily wanted a relatively lightweight , solidly built frame and this bike has it. The 700c wheels seems rather popular for hybrid bikes and have been well -received by many commuters. This wheel does not have nearly as much drag as a mtb tire and more protection and gripping power than a thin road bike tire.

The bike comes nearly fully assembled and is well packaged, inside an inner and outer protective carton. Setting up the handlebars, pedals and seat were a snap.

The whole process took about 15 minutes.

The frame is painted a very nice black (So I'm told, It actually looks dark green to my eyes), though it isn't the same frame seen in the product photo (The down tube is much thicker on the bike I received). The saddle is very, very comfortable and the adjustable sprung aluminum stem is a nice bonus, accommodating a variety of preferred sitting/riding styles.

Braking is very even and responsive with little fade. The bike feels well balanced while maneuvering and provides very forgiving handling characteristics. The front suspension fork is lightweight and mostly responsive on the rebound. IMO, it needs a bit more pressure but I've yet to get to it. I'd recommend experimenting with the proper pressure based on your weight and riding style.

The cables are well protected and insulated from the frame to avoid scratches. The fenders and baskets are easily removed, should you choose to do so (I did. It took about 12 minutes because you need to remove the rear tire to get at a screw for the rear fender). Adding a quick release hub to the rear tire (the front tire already has one) would be an inexpensive and highly useful tool, IMO.

I'm about average height and weight (5'7"@ 165lbs) and I can ride for hours without discomfort on the stock saddle. Shifting is easy and smooth and the system never skipped a gear, even when pedaling uphill and changing gears.

I recently compared this model to a few local bike shop products that cost $200+ more than the Schwinn. The overall workmanship/fit and finish of the Schwinn holds up well compared to the popular models I saw.

The bike is equipped with bike shop quality components, albeit not the high end, that will generally perform quite well.
After checking out several department store bikes from Walmart and Target, I'd definitely recommend staying away from the lesser quality bikes commonly sold in department stores. With few exceptions they tend to have cheaper, heavier frames and poor quality components and poor fit and finish in the assembly.

Comparing frames among several bikes (including this one) ranging in price from ~$300 to ~$900 yielded components of Chinese manufacture with finish of the welds, weight and general construction approximately equal.

I'm not suggesting the Schwinn Crrest is better than a well build bike shop bicycle like a mid-grade Giant, Trek or Santa Cruz, but the latter could set you back anywhere from $600 to $2000, easily.

I am suggesting that, this bike is comparable, for the average, casual road or paved trail rider, to much more expensive bikes I've looked at and ridden.

Happy trails.. or roads

So/so, March 1, 2010
By Mandi A. Marrs (Santa Rosa, CA USA)

Bike is nice and sturdy, but we paid $50 to get it assembled. Also it is EXTREMELY heavy for our 5 year old son. He likes the way it looks but because of the weight, he seems to have a harder time stopping (braking).

Excellent Bike.. Packaging could be better.., February 16, 2010
By Bert M. (Peoria, Az United States)

Purchased this bike for my 5 year old son for Christmas 09. When it was delivered, we noticed several parts sticking out of torn parts of the box. Nothing was damaged with the exception of a few minor scuffs but we figured those wouldnt be the last and since they were on the bottom of the frame, we would accept them. Upon assembling the bike, I found that the thin nut that holds the back tire on was stripped beyong salvation. Seeing that it was 2 days before Christmas, there was no chance of getting a new one from the manufaction so I "borrowed" a bolt from his old bike which worked, but didnt fit properly. The borrowed nut was much thicker than the original one therefore the acorn nut that goes on the outside of the training wheel (stripped one supposed to be on inside of training wheel) barely had any threads to hold it. Needless to say it has held up until now and I am awaiting a response from Amazon on getting a new one. Other than that, he loves it and it is the perfect size for a 5 year old.

Solid bike, February 11, 2010
By K. Garber (Atlanta, GA)

My 4 year old son loves his new bike, but like other people have said, it is unbelievably heavy. It weighs more than my son and is hard for me to lift into our Jeep to take it places. I'm a little worried that once we take the training wheels off and he starts falling more, the weight of the bike falling on him is going to be a problem. That said, it is a really sturdy bike that I'm sure will last much longer than the flimsy bike he used to have. I do really like the fact that it has both pedal brakes and hand brakes-he can use the pedal brakes until he's more coordinated and has bigger hands, but he thinks the hand brakes make it look like a big boy's bike.
My husband put together the bike without a huge problem but got very frustrated that Schwinn seems to make one instruction manual that is used for all of its bikes. It made it very difficult to determine which directions were for this particular bike and which weren't.

Solid 2nd bike, January 11, 2010

Seems like a good bike, well built with the bigger kid extras (handle brakes, trick front wheel, cool sleek look). I had my bike mechanic put it together though, it was pretty tricky even for him.

Nice looking bike, January 30, 2010

great bike, January 9, 2010
By C. Contreras (ELP, TX)

I ordered this bike for my granddaughter for xmas......received it w/in a week. Came boxed properly and dad was great assembling it. Instructions were easy to read. No left over screws.... well built product. Sturdy. I would recommend for any young child. My granddaughter is 6 yrs. old and she is so happy with her Schwinn. The seat is adjustable for taller children and training wheels are removeable.

Great bike, poor packaging and shipping, October 22, 2009
By Christopher Gallagher "CGall" (Boston, MA)

I bought this bike for my 4 year old daughter. She loves the bike. It was easy to assemble. It took about 15 minutes. The bike has both a hand brake on the handle bars and a pedal brake, however, my daughter's can't reach the hand brake. Since it can't be adjusted, she can only use the pedal brake. Overall, the bikes seems to be of good quality and I am happy with my purchase.

The bike arrived in a box that was really beat up. The box was partially ripped in some spots and on one side a portion of the bike was sticking through the box. Once I took the bike out and started to assemble it I realized that the bike was damaged. One of the lug nuts that held the front wheel in place was partially crushed. Obviously, this bike fell from a height onto concrete or something very heavy fell on it to do that kind of damage. I sent the bike back and then had to wait 3 weeks for a replacement. The replacement came and the box was not in much better shape. I examined the new bike closely and found no real damage, but there were some scratches in the paint, most visibly on the handlebars. So, bike was also handled improperly in the shipping and handling process. I decided to keep the bike in spite of the scratches because I had wasted enough time getting to this point and hadn't found a nice bike at a local retailer for the same price.

I have had nothing but good experiences dealing with Amazon over the years. Customer service was helpful and responsive in this case. However, after reading some of the other reviews, I saw that many other people have had problems with the packaging and shipping of this bike. I would recommend the bike, but beware of the shipping and condition of the bike when you get it. Be prepared to send it back for another one becasue there is a good chance it will arrive damaged.

Strong ... but too heavy for our girl!, September 7, 2009
By E. Jeff Conklin "Jeff Conklin" (Napa, California)

We bought this bike for our daughter 2 years ago and are now looking for a smaller, lighter bike for her to actually learn to ride on. She has enjoyed riding it with training wheels when she goes out with Daddy on his jog, but now she is 6 ... and when she just wants to play she gets back on her tricycle, which is way small for her now. She is normal height and very strong, but when she is sitting on the bike, even with the seat set low, she is very high off the ground.

It probably comes down to being more about the process of learning to ride than about this bike. We thought we could skip the 12" bikes and get something strong that would take her from learning into 6th grade. The Jasmine will indeed last her a long time, but the lesson for us has been that a child who's sitting way high up on a heavy bike is too scared to relax and experience balance. (She has a scooter, by the way, and she is learning balance from playing on it.) Now we're thinking that a small, light plastic bike might be the ideal way for her to have that first balance experience, even if she tires of it quickly once she can ride without training wheels.

Great commute bike, February 11, 2010

Excellent commuter bike for women, January 16, 2010
By Cynthia R. (Burlington, Vermont)

This is really a great bike, and I've owned some great bikes. It does not come with model specific instructions, but it's not to difficult for anyone who has ever raised or lowerd a seat or handlebars or changed a flat tire. Be sure to have your allen wrenches ready. You will have to put on the handlebars, the front fender and wheel, the seat and the pedals (I added toe clips to my pedals). This is a good solid commuter bike for the price.

Great bike/great value, January 9, 2010
By J. C. (mandeville, la)

I looked at bikes at several local bike shops but couldn't really tell from riding why I should spend an additional $200.00 or more on another brand. This one has everything (and more) that I wanted. Shock absorbers in the comfortable seat and handlebars, gear shifters, a more upright sitting position...a nice ride for taking in the scenery or getting a good workout. Thanks to other reviewers, I knew I couldn't go wrong ordering this online. My husband is handy so assembling it didn't take too long. I love this bike!

Excellent, February 28, 2010
By Colby Tse

I bought this Hybrid for myself a few weeks ago and I must say I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The box it came in (was rather large) had all of the parts separated and organized well. It only took me about 2 hours to put the whole thing together and some parts came pre-assembled. (tubing, half part of the handle bars, exc) This bike is very fast and gets me in and out of classes with time to spare. It's a bike, it does what it's supposed to. It is very sturdy and the brakes work well. It has a very nice smooth and laid back feel to it and has been reliable.

The only thing I'd recommend adding is a rear bike rack for those rainy days to stop the water from drenching your back. (about 20-40 bucks for one) I added one and had a little bit of trouble putting it on; there's no place to screw it in under the seat so i had to screw in the rack securely with the screws on the brakes. it works well and is sturdy enough to hold about 40 lbs of books on it+ my laptop but just a heads up before you buy a rack.

Great Value, November 29, 2009
By Bob (Seal Beach, CA)

I purchased my Schwinn Midmoor bicycle about 8 weeks ago and have put 450 miles on it. It arrived safely, and I slapped it together and brought it to a local bike shop for a safety check (which is cheaper than a tune up or assembly). Since then, I had a friend who is a bike mechanic tune up the shifters, which makes a big difference.

I have removed the silly reflectors mounted on the front and rear spokes. I also removed the plastic front and rear sproket protectors (which make the bike look like a department store bicycle).

To make it a real commuter bike, I added a rear rack, two water bottle cages, a pump, a bell, a mirror, front and rear lights, a bike computer, an underseat bike bag (in which I store a spare tube, a repair kit and a bike multi-tool) a small pannier bag for the cross bar, a new seat, and new pedals with toe clips and straps.

I haven't added a chainguard or fenders. I have pants clips so will probably do without the chain guard. I live in Southern California and don't have to ride in the rain or snow, so I can also do without fenders.

I am just under 6' tall and weigh 205 pounds. I am very happy with my bike.

Nice features, great price, October 11, 2009
By A. Campbell

I am very happy with the bike. Fairly simple to assemble provided you know at least something about bikes and have the correct tools. Open end wrench and allen wrenches basically. My only complaint is that the handlebars don't feel right no matter how I adjust them... width feels too small. Will be ordering bigger handle bars but for the money this item is well worth it!

Great for recreational road riders, March 4, 2010
By Pedro Quintero (Bogota, Colombia)

After being an avid road rider in my school and college years i completely stopped after i got married. As a result and being 34, my belly started to grow and my cholesterol levels started to increase. For this reason and to improve my health, I decided i wanted to re-ignite my cycling habits but didn't want to break the bank for a high performance road bike. This is when i came across this Schwinn Prelude. I remember my father to have one Prelude back in the 80's and it was a top bike back then. At USD$ 219.99 (which is the price the bike was back in august 2009 when i bought it) i decided to go after this bike and i'm glad i did it.

I've been riding this bike during 7 months now and i think that's enough time to make an accurate review of this product. I'm not an everyday rider, i just use this bike on sundays for recreational road rides. Normally between 80-120 Kilometer road rides. To make it more confortable and safe on long rides i made a couple of upgrades to the original bike: Changed the stock pedals with Clipless Shimano Pedals, Changed the stock wheels with a pair of GW racing wheels, changed the stock tires with a a pair of Continental puncture resistance tires, changed the stock chain with a Shimano top end chain, changed the stock saddle with a Anti-prostatic Selle Italia saddle, bought a Cateye wireless computer, installed a flashing red safety light and a small saddle bag.

Of course, all these upgrades ended up costing as much as the bike itself, but they were definitely worth since the bike now is faster, lighter and most importantly... safer on the road. The stock group altough is not top class has performed well during this time. It comes with a Crankset with two sprockets and a 7-speed screwed freewheel. In order to install the new racing wheels, i had to change the freewheel for a 8-speed cassette. I also had to block one of the gears of the new 8-speed cassette in order match the 7-speed shifters on the handlebar. The Promax stock brake systems works perfectly if adjusted properly.

The frame is beautiful, strong and well built in aluminum. The fork is made of steel. The bike is a little bit heavy for a road bike but is light enough to make your ride confortable. I'm 1.77 (5' 8") and the frame fits just fine. I have the seat post adjusted to the middle, so it should fit people shorter and taller than me.

The bike performs well but this is not a racing bike. This is a very confortable and light bike to use to go to college or work or even recreational long weekend rides which is for what i use it. As other reviewer said, You won't win the Tour de France on this bike... but its still fast enough to keep or set the pace on the road with other recreational riders.

The stock wheels look fine but the stock tires look really cheap, and altough i never had a puncture with the stock tires, i felt i had to upgrade them for puncture resistance tires in order to be more confident away from the city.

One think i didnt like is that the shifters are in the center of the handlebar (Thumb shifters). They're not in the brake levers as modern road bike does. If you want to change gears on high speed rides or steep climbs, you will have to move your hands from the normal position to the center of the handlebar in order to shift gears and then move the hands back to the normal position. This can cause to lose a little bit of momentum while riding, but again, this is not a competition bike so you might live with this issue, not to mention, the price of the overall bike would increase too much with this "Ergopower" system.

All in all this is a great bike for the value, it doesn't look cheap at all. I know Schwinn is not the top name that once was, but it is still one of the most recognized bycicle builders in the USA and that makes you confident in the product.

I will try to post some pics later so you can have a better look at it, but i can guarantee you that you will hardly find a better road bike option for this budget from a "Brand" standpoint.

Hope this helps.

Very Nice Bike!, February 2, 2010
By Jeffrey Neufeld "Green Martian" (Mars! Outer space)

OK well i bought the Schwinn Prelude, i was a bit skeptical at first because some of the reviews said it is too small for someone around 5ft 11inches, and the target review says that the rims are equivalent to a 24inch rim..I've had the bike for about a month now. The only complaint i have with the product, is the way they package the bike for shipping. I received my first bike put it together and the front rim was bent..I called and they sent me another one asap.. Also I'm 5ft 11 inches and this bike fits me perfectly, of course everything doesn't fit exactly as a expensive bike would..But for a beginner like myself who is on a budget this bike is exactly what i need and what i could afford..I'm happy with it so far and give it 5 stars.

Wheeling with my dog, February 26, 2010
By K. Olsen "K. Olsen" (Northern Utah, USA)

This bike has been a very nice way to take my dog for a run and not worry so much about tipping over. The biggest problem is that it is difficult going uphill because of not having extra gears and the weight of the bike. It has been a comfortable size and so far seems to be pretty sturdy. Almost all of the packing materials it came in were able to be recycled, I loved that.

Schwinn, February 11, 2010
By Robert Cullen "Doomba" (Los Angeles)

Although the box looked pristine, the parts were strewn all over and as it turns out some screws and bolts came up missing. I don't think I will purchase a bicycle online again.

This was bought for my elderly mother who still loves to ride bikes, but wasn't comfortable riding a two-wheel bike. Now, she can ride with her great-granddaughter with confidence she won't fall.
